The Itinerary: We pick you up at your designated location in our clean comfortable and fully air conditioned minibus. We start off with a Belize City tour as we exit the city on our way to the northern highway; we drive for about 1 hour 15min to the new river where we then board a boat for a river trip to the Lamanai Mayan site. We then have lunch at the site then our guided tour of Lamanai. After the tour you’ll have time for a little gift shopping and then the boat ride back to where we board the bus for the return trip to your designated location. The total time for this tour is 7 hours. Lamanai meaning submerged crocodile is located on the banks of the New River. The best way to reach the Lamanai Mayan ruin site is by taking a 26 mile boat ride which is featured as part of the Mayan Ruin tour. The Lamanai Archaeological Reserve includes a small museum that features Mayan artifacts and history. There are also small gift shops with souvenirs made locally by the Mayan Women group among others. There are three large pyramids, restored stelae and a small unique ball court. Your tour guide will acquaint you with the interesting history of the Lamanai Mayan ruins since it was inhabited much longer than any other Mayan sites in Belize. The 108feet High Temple was first been built around 100 BC offers a magnificent view. A short distance to the south of the High Temple is a ball court, the only one in Lamanai, dating to around 900-950 AD. It has a circular stone marker which covers a mysterious chamber where liquid mercury and several pieces of jade were found. Structure N10-9, another of Lamanai’s massive pyramids, was initially constructed around 500-550 AD. Also informally referred to as the “Jaguar Temple” because of a jaguar mask found here, the structure is twelve feet shorter in exposed height than the High Temple. However a significant amount of this temple is under the ground. The smallest of the three excavated temples at Lamanai is the Mask Temple, named after a 13 feet (4m) high carved mask. It represent a humanized face with a crocodile headdress and dates to the late 5th to early 6th century. What makes the Lamanai Mayan Ruins tour even more interesting is the birds and wildlife that can be viewed during this tour. Many Black Howler Monkeys live in vicinity of the Mayan ruins. |
