| Altun Ha Rock(Mayan Ruins) |
| The Altun ha Archaeological Reserve is located about 31 miles away from Belize City, in a small village in Belize called Rockstone Pond. Part of the charm of the Altun ha Mayan ruins tour is the people. You will find zericote carvings made right there in Rockstone Pond by the locals and there are small gift shops where you definitely will find something to remind you of the wonderful time you had in Belize. The Altun Ha Mayan Ruins has become popular because a carved jade head of the Mayan sun god Kinich Ahau was found in one of seven tombs found here. The 10lb. Jade head is one of Belize's National treasures, today a replica can be viewed at the Museum of Belize. Jade does not occur naturally in Belize and a lot of jade has been found in this site, therefore Altun ha is thought to have been a religious center because jade could only be worn by Mayan of great importance like religious leaders. The Altun ha Mayan site consists of two central plazas and there are still some mounds covered by vegetation. Visitors can climb the Temple of Masonry Altars one of the major ruins which rises about 54ft from the plaza or you can hike up the Temple A-6. A climb to the top of the temple provides an excellent view of the entire site. The Mayan ruins can be viewed on even ground which is why we feature it as a wheelchair accessible tour. What is now known as the Altun Ha Mayan ruins was once a flourishing City. It was once an important trading center. Over the centuries it became a small agricultural village, but they left their legacy. | April 13, 2010 I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation on behalf of our entire group for such a memorable day in Belize. The communication before our arrival was great as well as our detailed instructions as to where to meet you and the time. Our day seemed to fly by and we all enjoyed your wonderful personality and knowledge. Our lunch at the Mayan Wells was awesome. Tell Benita I followed her recipe and it was a success. I've made it several times since our trip. Hope to be able to visit your country again and I will certainly contact you as well as recommend your company, without hesitation, to anyone traveling there. It was an UnBELIZEable day. Paula May 12, 2011 What an amazing trip! My husband and I loved the time we spent with Allen and finding out all about the Mayan history & culture. The Missionary Home and Assembly Hall made us long for the time when there will be no more borders. And the food was totally delish! Thanks so much! Frank and Michelle Sacramento |
